"The child must know that he is a miracle, that since the beginning of the world there hasn't been, and until the end of the world there will not be, another child like him”
- Pablo Casals
Founded in 1947 in Alexandra Township, our Feeding Scheme has provided food and clothing for destitute and underprivileged children of all races, colours and creeds over many decades.
Rabbi Weiler instilled in our psyche the understanding that “You cannot educate a hungry child.” Hunger stunts a child’s physical and mental growth and interferes with his ability to concentrate on the work at hand. For this reason we endeavour to provide our children with a nourishing daily meal and we provide for approximately 2500 children every day - even more during the cold winter months. Tragically, population growth and socio-economic factors are combining to produce a continual increase in the number of hungry children in South Africa.
During 2011, the number of children in dire circumstances at M C Weiler School alone grew from 150 to 250 and we provided new winter tracksuits, school shoes and thermal vests. We also collected and distributed second hand clothing throughout the year. For many of them these uniforms are the only clothes that they possess. Either way, the pride of the children in their new clothes is a joy to see.
